Stratus Consulting » Case Studies » Team Development Process at the Warehouse
Summary of Needs
- A strategically important leadership team was not working together effectively as a leadership team resulting in poor morale in their function, lack of engagement and confusion regarding the strategy and plan
Stratus Consulting's Approach
- Interviews were conducted with the leadership team and some of their direct reports to identify current barriers to team effectiveness, enablers to success and suggestions for improvement
- A 2 day workshop was held with the leadership team commencing with feedback of the interview data and discussion of the strategic context and what it required of them. The workshop also included work on leadership team purpose, role clarity, and the development of leadership team processes to lead the function effectively
- A follow up half day workshop was held 6 weeks later to review progress, confirm direction and on-going actions
- A 2 day workshop was held with the full team (70 people) to engage them in the team vision and to create shared understanding about what to expect from the leadership team and what was required of them to deliver on the vision.
The Results
- The leadership team agreed their purpose, how they would operate and clarified their roles both as a leadership team and as individuals
- The leadership team began to function as a team and were able to support each other and hold each other accountable to deliver results
- The leadership team were clearly united and singing from the same hymn book to their staff resulting in improved employee engagement and morale
- The wider team was energised and engaged around the vision and had a clear understanding of and took accountability and responsibility for what they needed to do to deliver the plan

"Gabrielle designed, with the leadership group, and then facilitated 2 very successful 2 day vision workshops for the NZ Merchandise team. We asked Gabrielle to help us as we had had previous workshops that were not successful, and so the potential for cynicism and failure was high. She listened to what we wanted to achieve out of the workshop, and designed an appropriate agenda that we were sure would achieve the results we wanted. Gabrielle picked up what we were driving at even when we were sometimes unsure, she is very astute and has a knack for wordsmithing which makes us all sound good. Gabrielle was most helpful on the day in terms of keeping the workshop on track to achieve our objectives, by reading the audience extremely well in terms of letting things of value go over time, but keeping the whole workshop within the time frames.
As a leadership team, we have all learned something from the way that Gabrielle put together the workshop, coached us through our presentations, and managed the follow through action planning. One of the keys of the workshop was for the participants to have fun, and as an unexpected side benefit, the leadership group also had fun over the 2 days, due mainly to the coaching and support we received from Gabrielle. I would certainly recommend Gabrielle to facilitate any large conferences or large scale meetings which aim to engage people in a fun way".
